The DMARC evolution: What’s changed?

But recently, the number of email domains with a valid DMARC record jumped 60% in two months in 2024. This is thought to be due to Google and Yahoo’s new requirements (we’ll soon see more in light of Microsoft’s recent announcement), but there’s more to it. While standards like Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) v4.0, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) don’t explicitly require DMARC, having it in place definitely helps organizations meet their compliance requirements. It’s like having an extra layer of security that makes it easier to tick off those compliance checkboxes.
Plus, it’s worth noting that countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Denmark, and New Zealand have really embraced DMARC, making it mandatory. Non-compliance can result in consequences, including hefty fines, increased regulatory scrutiny, damage to businesses’ reputations, and even legal challenges.

The adoption of DMARC is on the rise globally, showing an increase in awareness and implementation. The amount of valid DMARC records confirmed through DNS shows this growth. But, nearly two-thirds of companies still require an MSP to optimize their DMARC setup effectively.

When examining the DMARC policies applied, the data reveals:
- Most domains (68.2%) use the ‘none’ policy, which monitors but doesn’t enforce, leaving room for potential impersonation.
- Around 19.6% of the records enforce a ‘reject’ policy, providing the highest level of security by blocking unauthenticated sources.
- Only 12.1% opt for the ‘quarantine’ policy, which isolates suspicious emails for further review.
