What is ransomware?

Ransomware is a type of malicious software designed to block access to a computer system or data until a ransom is paid. It often encrypts files and demands payment in exchange for the decryption key.

In email-based ransomware attacks, cybercriminals typically send phishing emails that appear legitimate but contain malicious attachments or links. When the recipient clicks the link or downloads the attachment, the ransomware is activated and begins encrypting the user’s files or systems. The attacker then demands a ransom to restore access. These emails often impersonate trusted brands or colleagues to trick recipients into taking action, making email a highly effective delivery method for ransomware.

DMARC’s critical role in protection
