SPF Limit Reached: Fix DNS Records Before They Break Legitimate Email

SPF limit overview:

  • SPF has a hard 10-lookup limit: If a receiving server goes over it, the receiver returns a PermError.
  • That can affect legitimate email: Authentication becomes less reliable, which increases delivery risk.
  • Most SPF limit issues build gradually: New vendors, nested records, and unused senders all add complexity.
  • The fix is usually operational: Audit senders, remove what’s no longer needed, simplify, and retest.
  • Ongoing review is still important: Vendor-side changes can push the record back toward the limit.
